As Black History Month begins, St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School is celebrating an important opportunity to recognise, reflect upon and learn about the achievements, contributions and experiences of Black people throughout history and in society today.

To mark the start of the month, our school community gathered together for a special Celebration of the Word led by Mr Cummins. During this time of prayer and reflection, pupils considered the importance of recognising the dignity and value of every person, remembering that we are all uniquely created and loved by God.

The celebration focused on the words from Genesis 1:27:

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.”

This powerful message reminds us that every individual is made in the image and likeness of God and deserves to be treated with respect, kindness and compassion.

Throughout October, children across the school will take part in a variety of learning activities exploring the lives and achievements of influential Black individuals who have made a lasting impact on the world. Pupils will learn about figures such as Mary Seacole, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Marcus Rashford, alongside many others who have inspired positive change through courage, leadership and determination.

Black History Month also provides an opportunity for children to reflect on important themes including equality, justice, inclusion and respect. Through their learning, pupils will develop a deeper understanding of the rich diversity that strengthens our communities and enriches our society.

As a Catholic school, St Augustine’s is committed to promoting the values of dignity, justice and respect for all. Black History Month offers a meaningful opportunity to reinforce these values and celebrate the unique gifts and contributions of every individual.

We look forward to sharing our learning, reflections and celebrations with families throughout the month as we come together to honour Black History Month and celebrate the diversity that enriches our world.
