We are incredibly proud to share some fantastic news from St Augustine’s — our boys’ football team have been crowned winners of the National League Trust Northern Finals and are now heading to Wembley Stadium!
The team travelled to the University of York to compete in the Northern Finals, taking on schools from across the region in a highly competitive tournament.
Group Stage Success
The competition began with five group games, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals. After a slow start and a defeat in the opening match against Altrincham, the boys showed real determination and resilience.
Strong performances followed, with impressive victories over Halifax Town, Morecambe FC, and Oxford City, securing second place in the group. Although the final group game ended in a loss to Boston United, qualification for the semi-finals was already secured.
An Outstanding Semi-Final Performance
In the semi-final, the boys faced Oxford City once again and delivered an outstanding performance, racing into a 3–0 lead. All eight players played their part, showing fantastic teamwork and commitment as they earned a place in the final.
A Dramatic Final
The final saw a rematch against Altrincham and was a tense, closely contested affair. Chances were limited, but the boys remained relentless and worked tirelessly to stop Altrincham from creating opportunities.
At full time, the score remained 0–0, meaning penalties would decide who would progress to Wembley.
Penalty Shoot-Out Heroes
The boys showed incredible composure under pressure, scoring three excellent penalties, and a brilliant save from Rory sealed a dramatic shoot-out victory. This unforgettable moment booked the team’s place at Wembley Stadium.
Off to Wembley!
The boys will now represent the North in the National League Trust North vs South Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 10th May 2026. They are also Darlington’s first ever primary school team to reach a Wembley final, making this achievement truly historic.
To top off an incredible day, the team even received a personal message from Alan Shearer, congratulating them on their success!
