What an incredible day for our St Augustine’s boys’ football team as they travelled to Durham for the next round of the National League Trust Football Competition — and what a journey it turned out to be!

Despite the very windy conditions, our boys showed resilience, teamwork, and real footballing talent from the first whistle to the last. The morning began with four group-stage matches, where the team stormed ahead with fantastic performances:

  • 1–0 win against Halifax Town
  • 2–0 win over Spennymoor Town
  • Hard‑fought draws against South Shields and York

We spent most of the morning at the top of the group, only slipping to second place by a single point when Halifax Town clinched their final game. This meant a semi-final showdown with Hartlepool — and what a semi-final it was!

Hartlepool struck first, but Ollie responded in style, smashing in a brilliant volley to level the score and take us to a tense penalty shoot-out. The boys showed immense courage under pressure. With the shoot-out balanced at 2–2, Hartlepool stepped up for what could have been the winning penalty… but Rory, our outstanding goalkeeper, pulled off a huge save, tipping the ball over the bar.

Into sudden death we went — and once again Rory delivered, making another heroic save to secure our place in the final!

Watching those penalties was nerve‑shredding, so the boys deserve massive credit for their strength, focus, and composure in such a high-pressure moment.

The final saw a rematch with Halifax Town. Knowing we had already qualified for the Northern Finals, the pressure lifted — and the boys delivered their best performance of the day. With confident spells of possession and two excellent goals from Jack, we sealed a 2–0 victory and ended the day as champions.

Even more impressively, due to two key injuries before the competition even began, the team played five of the six games with only six players. Every single boy gave 100% and represented St Augustine’s with pride, determination, and heart.

We also want to congratulate Abbey School, whose girls have also qualified for the Northern Finals — a fantastic achievement!

A huge thank‑you to the Darlington FC Foundation for hosting such a well-run event and to all the parents and family members who came along to cheer the boys on. Your support means the world.

What a day. What a team. Wembley is another step closer — and we couldn’t be prouder!
