Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and citizenship enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.
We encourage children to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community.
In doing so we help to develop their sense of self worth. We teach them how society is society is governed and organised. We ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through the school council and pupil leadership groups.
The aims of the PSHE and citizenship are to enable pupils to:
- know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle
- be aware of safety issues
- understand what makes for good relationships with others
- have respect for others
- be independent and responsible for members of the school community
- be positive and active members of a democratic society
- develop self-confidence and self -esteem, and make informed choices regarding personal and social issues
- develop good relationships with other members of the school ad the wider community
At St Augustine's Catholic Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to help every child flourish as a unique individual created and loved by God. Through our mission statement, “I have come so that they may have life and live it to the full" (John 10:10), we support children to develop the knowledge, skills and virtues needed to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives whilst making a positive contribution to their communities.
Our curriculum is purposeful, progressive and inclusive. It equips children with the understanding they need to build positive relationships, care for their physical and mental wellbeing, keep themselves safe both online and offline, and become responsible citizens in an ever-changing world. We believe that every child is special and made in the image and likeness of God, and our teaching promotes dignity, respect, compassion and justice for all.
Through PSHE, pupils learn to:
- develop positive, respectful and healthy relationships;
- understand and manage their emotions and mental wellbeing;
- recognise their uniqueness, gifts and talents as children of God;
- keep themselves safe, including online, in the community and in relationships;
- understand consent, personal boundaries and how to seek help when needed;
- recognise and value diversity whilst treating all people with dignity and respect;
- understand their rights and responsibilities as members of a democratic society;
- develop financial awareness and make informed decisions;
- appreciate the importance of community, stewardship and caring for God's world;
- build resilience, confidence and independence;
- explore future aspirations, careers and opportunities;
- become active citizens who contribute positively to school, parish and wider society.
Our PSHE Curriculum
Our curriculum is organised around four key themes:
Relationships
Developing an understanding of family, friendships, relationships with God, belonging, growing up and respecting others.
Health and Wellbeing
Learning about physical health, emotional wellbeing, mental health, personal hygiene, healthy lifestyles and first aid.
Staying Safe
Understanding safeguarding, consent, bullying, abuse, online safety, road safety and how to seek support when worried.
Living in the Wider World
Learning about financial capability, careers, community, digital citizenship, Catholic Social Teaching and stewardship of God's creation.
Our Catholic Ethos
As a Catholic school, PSHE is taught in the light of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching. We encourage children to recognise their God-given dignity, respect the dignity of others and use their gifts and talents in service of the common good. Through PSHE, children learn that they are called to love God, care for one another and become responsible stewards of the world around them.
As a Catholic School, this framework will be implemented in the light of the our mission statement with Christianity at the centre of our approach.
